WAN router

We’ve all heard of the word 'router' at least once at the office or at school. In the tech world it is something that provides us great use when it comes to the internet. A router is a device people use for computer networking, meaning that it allows access to multiple computers in a network to the World Wide Web.

The most common use for routers is at home or in an office, where a device like this helps you and others to connect to the internet. To put it in very simple words, your internet service provider gives you internet, which comes in through a cable or a modem, into your router which is then used to connect all the computers in the same small area to the web.

A WAN Router is a device that connects a larger area. In order to understand exactly how it works, you should first know that WAN refers to a wide area network – which basically covers broader areas like metropolitan or regional areas. The WAN router is used to connect the many computers that form such a network.

The connection between computers from a network and the internet is done using a WAN Router; the principle is as simple as with LANs (Local Area Networks). An internet service provider grants access to the internet through cables and modems, while the WAN Router makes the exchange of information packets between them possible.

The device manages to forward information using the internet through a series of interconnected routers. Data comes in with a destination address that the router reads in order to be able to transmit it forward. Once the address is known, the device passes the data packets along to the next part of its journey, onto a new network. The same process applies to both LANs and Wans, making it possible for you to connect to the World Wide Web.
